#ecuadoring1

Monday morning.
WHERE is my C O F F E E.

yawnyawnyawn.

They have a TREE of my favourite flowers right outside the house and its HUGE! (Fuschia's)  and its right outside the front door. I already love this place! Robbie told me that any of the hanging baskets in Canada are huge trees in Quito. So awesome.

This morning I woke up, had a pretty nice sleep, and was warm! I had a small heater in my room. i woke up to the sounds of the children downstairs in the orphanage laughing and playing; melts my heart. I was exploring and looking out my window and I found a small garden with a small wooden etched sign in it that read, "Eden." so, so sweet.

At one of the airports throughout our journeys yesterday, I picked up some cool lime refreshers packets (at the time they hadn't got these yet in Canada, so it was fun to try them!) So while the guys were having their cups of coffee, I was drinking my CLR. nomnomnom. This morning, Mackenzie got up at 6:50AM to go and play drums for Robbie's church. Which is where we are heading right now! I'm so excited about this, I know Robbie is really thrilled to have Mackenzie on the worship team, and it's such a blessing to play alongside each other in Quito!

Almost all the roads here are placed together in an octagon pattern in the roads. All the bricks are carefully placed and put together to make a very intricate design - or else just too lazy to place them all in a straight line! But they're still all so pretty! All the houses and buildings are so different from each other, so full of colour and design, i love this. Every Sunday in Quito they shut down a major road for bikers!

Robbie said he thinks its mostly going to rain the entire time were here, I sure hope not! Later today after church, we are going to go out for Chinese Food! (weird right!). Afterwards we are going to go to Robbie's house then we are going to go to the market. I could not have anticipated how eccentric and how colourful and vibrant the market was. There was just piles amongst piles of fruit and veggies everywhere you looked, but then we turned one corner and there was a huge butcher, all this raw meat, it was kind of weird, some of it was full out green.

I was telling Jen about how I was preschool teacher and she exclaims, 'I heard! I heard you are very creative! We have some projects for you to work on ;)'

small side note: the sirens here for fire trucks, ambulances and police cars are all the same, but it seems to me that they are always going! They do drive pretty crazy here.

ROBBIES CHURCH
Mackenzie said that the area by Robbie's church is known as 'Gringo Town' HAHA.
Steve said that so far, Mackenzie is the #1 missionary because he got up at 450AM to go play drums at Robbie's church. It's interesting though, when I was in Panama and now in Quito, during worship it's like a different connection with God. It's like the words just hit home. This morning at church is a mother's day sermon. The pastor called up a grandmother, her son's and wife and grandson and asked to dedicate their grandson to the Lord.

ACTS 21:1-25

1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command:"Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restorethe kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come backin the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walkfrom the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus-- 17 he was one of our number and shared in this ministry." 18 (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 "For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms, " 'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, " 'May another take his place of leadership.' 21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." 23 So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart.Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs."

Do not underestimate ministry and the power of it. it's as easy as shaking someones hand and saying hello. You do not need special 'ministry' classes.

WELP - got my first bite! hope I don't die! ,, on my upper left arm. I got out my after bite and gave it a little shake and took the cap off, and it EXPLODED all over me! It's really strong and potent. The pastor is only in the middle of his sermon and I REAK of after bite. PERFFFF.

Before we left the orphanage this morning Jen made sure to remind us to have a photocopy of our passport with us to take everywhere because if we got pulled over we would all need to get out of the van and show them our information. (it kind of reminded me of the martyrs in Jesus Freaks, when they would share their stories about how they were pulled over and asked for their paper.. but its nothing like that; we arnt that extreme. haha)

When we were sitting in church, I cant remember who said it but this was really funny:
"I dream of a world where I can cross the road and not have my motives questioned. - The Chicken"

Sometimes the truth is easy and sometimes the truth is hard, but in the end, the truth is the truth.
what do you do with that truth?

After church we then went out for chinese food. Hmm. That was interesting; it was good, but kind of ironic that my first meal in Quito is Chinese. We ordered sweet&sour chicken, sweet&sour pork, Spring Rolls, Pineapple Chicken, 3L coke, Pork&Beef fried rice, Wonton and some chicken broth soup stuff. It was a good lunch and was enjoyed by all; we even had a few of Robbie's friends come and join us too!

After lunch we went to the market. OHMYGOODNESS the market was unreal. SO much fruit everywhere and so many colours.  Everywhere you looked there was fruit and vegetables and everything delicious. Of corse these are things that Mackenzie is not a fan of so he did not enjoy it as much as I did, except for when we stumbled across one little moldy meat shack in the back of the market - disgusting.
Robbie bought a bunch of different fruit for when we get back to try, real Quito-esque fruits! Im excited!

All streets in Quito are named after historic dates that have happened there, super cool!

______Quito has the most bio-diversed rainforest in latin america!! ________

So driving from the church and lunch we headed for the super market. Very interesting! There was so many new and different chocolates and candies and so cheap! There was also all 3L pops and giant watermelons. We bought all of our groceries for the week - it was a lot, I was the only girl on the trip and the rest were full grown males. Hungry Boys!
On the way to go to the grocery store we stopped to get some gas - it was $1.03!!!! unreal. And apparently it's company policy to only have 2 people in the car when filling up. weird. so all the men got out while we filled up!

So we just arrived at the orphanage and there's a huge lama in the front lawn! haha
We then had our orientation of caring for the children, how to act and talk around them - not to be super clingy or emotionally attached. We then spoke about each child individually and how some disabilities (1/3rd of the children) and to try and not pick them up very much or spend too much time with one child. We then went for a tour of the orphanage and meet all the children and the nannies. They were so great and so cute! So full of energy and happy to see us; especially Robbie and Jen!

After our tour, around 6pm, we headed to the grocery store to get some more foods for our meal. some things I got was foot powder for Mackenzie and some Spanish toothpaste and I bought some bubblegum candies - they were pretty nast. We then arrived back at the orphanage and Team A (Robbie, Keith and I) made dinner. Robbie started it off with lemon basil, white wine chicken, alfredo sauce and bowtie pasta! - YUMM.

SO. In case you were wondering- it's finally hit. The boys have finally started cracking their crude and gross jokes (mostly about bodily functions). I like to think they were holding off because Im the only girl in the group and they wanted to be respectful. But it's all over. Right now there's a great joke that's oh so funny about 'slot machines', 'jack pots' and 'jack pots' ... I think it has to do something with the washroom and what happens in there. Steve chimed up and said that Rebecca reminded him before they left, 'Now remember, there is a GIRL on your trip.' haha. Thanks for looking out for me Rebecca!

Now onto bigger and better things.
Settlers of Catan & Ice Cream Sandwiches
#nomnomnomnomnom

Now while all of these great fun things were going on; Robbie was cutting up fruit and getting us to try them all. Now I was all for trying all these new fruits, but there was just this one that looked like calamari and I just couldn't do it. But then everyone gathered round and I got pressured, shed a few tears and ate it. It was alright but there was alot of weird textures.

Mackenzie did not come to my rescue.

Prior to my Quito initiation, I had finally made contact with my Pawwh. Through Steve's Skype, it was great. I told him all about my trip and the flying fun on the way there. I told him to download skype so I could show him around the orphanage and such. I am so excited for the jungle on Saturday and our trip to Mindo! there's over 500 species of birds and about the same for flowers! Nanny would love it so much! It is called the cloud forest, not a rain forest because it's usually just clouds I can't remember exactly what sets it apart but I know there's no monkeys or snakes! ... boooo.

Alright, well good night!
Get ready for another fun filled journal entry tomorrow! WOO. first day of club!

PS - I'm pumped. Helping out with the babies in the orphanage tomorrow morning!
